Is there a list of which chips are compatible? In terms of pinout and memory capacity?

I'm trying to orderan obselete part (sst39sf040) and am having no luck.

Is there a way I can find out an equivelent that will work, I may even have one lying around the house in an old computer motherboard!

How can I find if a chip is compatible? I'm guessing the pinout, voltage and capacity has to match.... Anything else?

what package?

you can just lookup that device in devices.txt and find its class, then do a search for its class and find a chip in the same package/size and voltage etc.
