Hi,

I try to read a "never used" 16F84A.
It reads FF : ok

but it cant burn

green led ok when inserted
red led ok when reading

i use an old desktop IBM PC on serial port (DB9) with no cable ; i have about 10V between pin 5 (MCLR) and pin 14 (Vdd) ; it should be enough (description indicates 8,2V as a minimum)
using XP. Red led is on when i try to program

jumpers are on : 8-18 pin
and internal VPP

abort at address 00000h with icprog 1.06B

should i use external 12V ?

Help appreciated
So frustrating not able to try my program !!!

You do not need external 12V.

Use different software.

There are WinPIC800, IC-prog, PICpgm software available.

That because the JDM is a simple circuit programmer, the performance and stability is depending on the computer you used. Different software controls hardware in different way.
