GQ-4X + Winbond W25Q32

Hey guys super new to this. I just got my programmer and have been playing around with it a bit. I successfully wrote and read random bytes onto a SST25VF016B chip. Got excited so thought I'd try to read off an onboard chip.

I'm using a SOIC8 clip so trying to read right off the board. Broke down a Dell N5050 and its using a Winbond W25Q32. First of all, when I click ID, the device ID shows "000000" which sort of confuses me. How would I add that in manually? Anyway, when I read, it simply reads 00 bytes all the way through.

Any guidance for someone getting started? Thanks!

The external power is not for this purpose. It is used when you connect the programmer with un-powered USB hub.

Yes. You can try to power your mother board and read the chip. But in this case, do not connect #8 pins. That is for power. Just all signal lines. The chip should be powered by your mother board itself.

If this does not work, then you need to remove the chip and program it off the PCB. Since you already have testclip, then you can just clip the chip program it. You do not need another SOIC adapter.

Ok so by your response I assume I either need to:

1) Read the on-board bios with the motherboard powered on?

.. or ..

2) Remove the chip from the board and read it "out of circuit" ?

Is this where an external GQ-4X power supply is needed, or is the GQ-4X external power supply used for something else?

Thanks for your response!

This does not work. The programmer has limited power, it can not power up your whole board.

Just to make sure I have this thing hooked up correctly, do I have my wires oriented correctly in the ZIF? Instead of an official adapter I'm just using the clip with a header pin set.

Why can't the GQ-4X find the device id for this chip?

Thanks!
