Is there a way to protect the code on a 24C256L, read loads of these in the past but had a couple now that i cant read in circuit, could the circuit be a problem ? or can it be protected ?

In oder to change the sofware, we need to repeat the problem here and know what is the software problem.

If your chip can be easily removed from the board, then you can just program it on the programmer. That should not have problem.

Just dusted of a old serial programmer, and used IC Prog to read this chips without a problem, can something have gone wrong with my GQ-4X never had issues before.

I tried a different chip from the same but older panel that has a DIL socket for the eeprom, removed it and tried to read it all blank again.

If your board CPU controls this chip, then you are unable to read/write the chip while the CPU occupied it. In this case you need to de-solder the chip and program it on the programmer ZIF socket.

check you 24C256L chip address pins. The software can change the address by click the CFG button.
