I bought this programmer off of ebay:

h**p://cgi.ebay.com/Enhanced-JDM-PIC-programmer-4-Microchip-12F629-New-V2_W0QQitemZ300172708445QQihZ020QQcategoryZ4661QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

How/where would I apply external power supply if I needed too (If i ever decided to use a USB - Serial adapter)?

There is a -12+ port(two pin header) on board. apply DC 12V on it if needed. However, please make sure your serial port is a good port and you need this 12V.
The programmer does not work with USB->Serial adapter. IT only works with standard RS232 port.
