Having never used a programmer before, I would like to program some SGS Thompson (ST) M27C4002-10FI chips. Can i use a VP-280 from a usb port on a computor and how hard is this to do. Thanks Barry

Yes. The VP280 supports M27C4002. It is a USB programmer and the software is pretty easy to use. You can download the software to take a look.
